With prose as sere and jagged as the dry riverbed of a once free flowing river, Jane Harper delivers a story of passion, tragedy and murder set in the landscape of drought locked sheep stations surrounding a small, shriveling, country town outside Melbourne, Australia. In this debut novel, the author skillfully and evocatively weaves together past and present events and characters using metaphors of running water and dry, dusty, life crippling drought as she builds to an explosive and memorable climax. Ms. Harper’s writing is excellent; clever, suspenseful, visual and very atmospheric. The pace of this riveting novel is steady and slow, but with enough unexpected twists to keep the reader guessing. This is an impressive first novel and the beginning of what promises to be a popular series featuring her main protagonist, Federal Agent Aaron Falk. I highly recommend this book.
