I was very skeptical when I picked up this book and prepared to dislike it since I thought "how interesting can a book about Magic be?" Well I was wrong. Susannah Owens' children are fascinating in their own right and also given their magical powers, which their mother tried to protect them from but which they discovered about when they visited their aunt Isabelle. Not only did they learn about magic but Frannie, Jet, and Vincent learned about their ancestor Maria Owens who in the 1600s was accused of witchery for loving the wrong man. The line was supposed to be cursed in that anybody they loved would meet a dreadful fate. The trip keep trying to escape their destiny but in the face of true love what were they supposed to do? While I would not call the story "gripping" the novel moved nicely and kept me interested. I would recommend it. I'd probably call it a Grown Up's Harry Potter.
