Funk, Sex, God, and Genius in the Music of Prince
Mar 18, 2018pattyskypants rated this title 2.5 out of 5 stars
Prince was just another photo on the cover of Rolling Stone and I did hear and appreciate some of his recordings, but I never felt he was a genius. That said, it would take some convincing; I'm still not convinced. However, he WAS an artist and an excellent musician. That he wrote about sex all the time was kind of boring; but the music was good. I've read several books about this sex-music-religion-genius thing and I get it, I really do. I think they do the same thing with Dylan (except leave out the sex part, but Dylan didn't dress for that, did he) and Jerry (ditto). So, if you like to talk about this stuff at parties, this is a great book to mine for ideas. Also, you could skip the other sex-music-religion-genius books and just read this one, which is a bit less academic and a bit more gabby.
