When a young attorney, the story’s narrator mediates a disputed painting between the artist and the owner whose estranged wife is the painting’s subject. So begins a gripping tale that takes readers from Germany to Australia years later when the attorney sees the painting again and sets out to find who has put it up on view. Passion and partings are words I’d use to describe this book about a painting and the woman who is painted. He’s a wonderful writer. I was in a hurry for it to end though for as one reviewer says the people in the story are too ‘self-absorbed’ to make me care much how it all ends.
