Alex Berenson knows how to get your attention on page 1 and keep it until the end. THE PRISONER does that and more. It's a great story that once again poses the question of what happens when the bad guys (Islamic extremists) get their hands on some really lethal stuff. This is edgy stuff even if it is a novel. The chief character, John Wells, also adds to edginess of the novel because through him, Berenson plays both sides of the argument and sometimes makes you stop and think about the difference between fiction and reality. He presents the side of extremists and how they justify the pain and suffering they revel in. He also presents the side of the those who are fighting to limit the risk of harm by terrorists, and why they do what the do. And in this novel, he adds and unusual twist - how a career 'good guy' could decide to become a traitor and use his position to aid the 'bad guys.' As usual Berenson delivers an entertaining novel with enough edginess that you stop and think about what lessons are embedded in the story. Some folks like thrillers that are non-stop action; I prefer ones that tell the story in a way that you see what is going on and who is thinking what, and how the intricate pieces all come together in the end. This is one of the latter, and I loved it.
