Rory Landon has changed schools – again. She has spent her life in the shadows of her divorced and very famous parents, movie star mom and director dad. Now in 6th grade, she begins yet another after-school program that seeks to entertain her while she waits for her mom and dad to find time for her while fulfilling the obligations of their high profile careers. Rory is used to being the new girl, and figuring out how to “fit in” when faced with these situations, but Ever After School (EAS) presents a completely different situation for Rory. She ends up fighting with a fire-breathing dragon her first day, and the cast of characters she meets is vast – everyone from Rumpelstiltskin, Hansel and Sleeping Beauty. Many different fairy tales are explored through the course of EAS. This is Shelby Bach’s first novel, and the beginning of a series. Written for 8-12 year olds, Of Giants and Ice is easy to read and has a broad appeal. The many characters and fast paced adventure will appeal to both boys and girls and their parents reading along. The book is really fairy tales for older children. The characters get matched up with tales and then get to live them out bringing new life to old tales. Reviewed by CS
