Characters: 8/10 Plot: 9/10 Writing: 10/10 I listened to this on audiobook, so that influenced my reading experience of this particular book. First, comment on the narration: I liked it decently well. Joshua Swanson has a Hiccup-like neutral voice, and his impressions of the other character’s voices are fun. He’s not so great with female voices (especially Annabeth), but Coach Hedge and Leo, for instance, are spot-on. He also mispronounces Hera and Thalia, but I can overlook that. As always, Rick Riordan creates great characters. Coach Hedge and Leo are my favorite characters. They’re both very funny and people I would totally want to know IRL. This definitely reads as a sequel series to Percy Jackson, which has its positives and negatives. Riordan has done an excellent job of making it different enough that it’s still original and enjoyable. New demigods, new monsters, new rules, new villains, new premise. At first, it feels like he’s trying too hard to make the new villain sound worse than the titans, except that she actually is, so it works. I’m not as familiar with the mythology he’s pulling up, which means it feels new, but I’m not able to go “oh ho ho yeah, that guy!” I really like the integration of Roman mythology; it totally provides that new, interesting twist on the Greek stuff. I'm eager to start the next book! It’s definitely fun and enjoyable; absolutely perfect for its intended genre and audience.
