This is another wonderfully idiosyncratic look at the best roadside eats in the United States from Jane and Michael Stern, who (fortunately for the rest of us) have made a career out of sharing the most delectable treats, from the best clam chowder in the Northeast to the best taco trucks of Southern California, and all the goodness inbetween. While the Sterns appreciate and write about high-end cuisine, their focus is on the food of the common man. From the basics like barbecue, burgers and fries, fried chicken, and pizza, to more obscure regional specialties like sauerkraut balls, frito pie, cheese curds, smoked eel, and hoppel poppel, the Sterns have tasted it all and can tell you where to find the best. I am always grateful for the indexes to their books, because the regional organization gets a bit confusing (particularly their choice this time to include Kansas as part of the Southwest, while Nebraska joins MT, WY, UT, WA, OR, NV and CA in "Great Plains and the West;" they also omit the Dakotas altogether). In this book, the regional arrangement also means that items like fried chicken and ice cream are repeated multiple times throughout the volume. However, their descriptions are mouthwatering, and this volume contains numerous lovely full color photos to keep the reader salivating. Before you travel anywhere in this great nation (except the Dakotas), be sure to check what the Sterns recommend eating while you're there - you'll be glad you did.
