This film provided an excellent portrait of the difficulties in teaching in a poor urban high school. I should know, as I did this for one year. In the really tough schools, there are very few miracles. This film is realistic, in that very few miracles are accomplished. This is a great film to view in the year in which teachers and teacher unions are being savaged by right-wing legislators, governors, and mayors. Teaching is one of the most important jobs in our society. Unfortunately, teaching is a most disrespected profession in our society. As an aside - After 50 years of exclusion of minorities in Hollywood films, we get a mix of races. I wonder Southern audiences viewed it (if it played in the South).
