Sad, lyrical. I liked how the author told the ultimate fate of the characters whom Lillian encounters during the phases of her life: her roommate and the theater entrepreneurs in the Lower East Side of NYC, the prostitute in Seattle, her friend at the workhouse. Some of Lillian's journey seems very far-fetched - the Alaska-Siberia trip in particular - but much of the story is realistic and gives an interesting glimpse into American history.
