My first Penny novel (after reading 17 Robinson novels with Alan Banks) featuring Armand Gamache, a refreshing change with him being respectful, intelligent and perceptive yet firm when needed. His has with him his very able assistant Beauvoir and the novice agent Nichol that he is trying to mentor, perhaps unsuccessfully at this stage. This first novel is a reasonably good page turner with a plausible yet not overly complicated plot, a few unexpected twists and turns but overall an enjoyable slower paced read. A solid good first novel and I look forward to the next one in the series.
