Out from Boneville is the first of 9 graphic novels in the original Bone series that explores the adventures of the three Bone cousins, Fone, Phony, and Smiley Bone, after they are run out of their town because of greedy Phoney Bone’s mistakes. As the story opens, they have spent two weeks running from angry Boneville mobs. Not long after discovering the Boneville citizens are no longer following them, they fall into a strange valley filled with tricky rat creatures, mysterious dragons, and an ominous hooded figure. The three Bone cousins quickly befriend a young girl named Thorn, her Gran’ma Ben, and the local tavern owner, Lucius Down, and begin to uncover how they really got to the valley, and what their presence will mean there. One remarkable detail about these books is that it’s very much a graphic novel. Jeff Smith, the author, uses images to truly bring a story to life, and it seems like a balance that would please both those who prefer novels and those who prefer comics. Another unique element about the story is that it’s a nice mix of intense discoveries, plot twists, an all-around thrilling storyline, and a certain type of comedy that makes the reader feel at home in the settings and with the characters. You feel like you’re a citizen of the small town of Barrelhaven. It feels like you live on the farm owned by Rose Ben and her granddaughter. It feels like you’re a member of the Bone family. It honestly feels like you’re incorporated into the story, watching from the sidelines, which makes the emotions more real. In conclusion, I would recommend this book to both avid novel enthusiasts and comic readers, and anyone who feels like delving into an subtly intricate world. - @freckleface675 of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library
