A lesser known film by the great Indian director Satyajit Ray ("The Apu Trilogy") about a film star reflecting on his life and career and he travels by train. He's played, with great subtlety and wit by Utam Kumar, an actual film star. At times, the blend of flashback, realism, and dream recall Fellini's masterpiece "8 1/2," but it's a bit less fantastic and surreal. Much of the action takes place on a train and you can't help but think this was an influence on Wes Anderson's Indian-set "The Darjeeling Limited," which uses music from a number of Ray films. Also available from Criterion: "The Music Room," "The Big City," "Charulata," and "The Apu Trilogy." In Bengali with subtitles.

An old black and white subtitled movie might not seem to offer much. The lead actor was already a big star and was playing one in the movie. He wasn't ostentatious at all, but rather very confident. A variety of characters interact with him and there are interesting changes as a result.

the hero begins as a actor seen live in theatre who follows the lure of films where all can be hidden behind the scenes. a long train journey leaves him exposed to his fellow travelers -creating interest and discomfort.
