I enjoy Alyssa Cole's romances quite a bit because of her versatility -- she has written a contemporary royal romance series that is super fun, but her Loyal League, Civil War-era series is equally good, despite being entirely different in tone, setting, etc. This is the second book in that series, and I think it's just as good as the first (An Extraordinary Union). Her historical research is impressive, and she's incredibly good at walking the very tricky tightrope of writing an interracial romance in an era when it was literally legal for black people to be kept as property. This is a really poignant and emotional romance -- while I usually go in for lighter and fluffier stuff, this was just really solid in terms of characterization, historical detail, and writing, and I can't wait to read the next book in the series (which is out in February!).
