"In her enthralling debut, Gilly Macmillan explores a mother's search for her missing son, weaving a taut psychological thriller as gripping and skillful as The Girl on the Train and The Guilty One." --In a heartbeat, everything changes...Rachel Jenner is walking in a Bristol park with her eight-year-old son, Ben, when he asks if he can run ahead. It's an ordinary request on an ordinary Sunday afternoon, and Rachel has no reason to worry--until Ben vanishes. Police are called, search parties go out, and Rachel, already insecure after her recent divorce, feels herself coming undone. As hours and then days pass without a sign of Ben, everyone who knew him is called into question, from Rachel's newly married ex-husband to her mother-of-the-year sister. Inevitably, media attention focuses on Rachel too, and the public's attitude toward her begins to shift from sympathy to suspicion. As she desperately pieces together the threadbare clues, Rachel realizes that nothing is quite as she imagined it to be, not even her own judgment. And the greatest dangers may lie not in the anonymous strangers of every parent's nightmares, but behind the familiar smiles of those she trusts the most. Where is Ben? The clock is ticking.."-- Provided by publisher.
A recently divorced mother finds herself in the eye of an increasingly suspicious public after her young son suddenly vanishes at a park on a Sunday afternoon and she decides to follow the clues to find him herself.

Rachel allows her son, Ben, to run ahead of her while walking in the woods. That is the beginning of her nightmare. With her son missing and the media against her, she tries to do everything in her power to find Ben.
The author provides viewpoints from both Rachel and the lead investigator, Jim.
Nicely written debut.

Great read. I couldn't put it down. Best psychological thriller I've read in a long time.

Enjoyable book. Some loose ends that were tied up, but not satisfactorily - why was the father injured? Why was this part even included in the book? I am not sure why so much onus was put on DI Clemo's discussions with the therapist. Just a lot of loose ends, or unsatisfactory character development. But it did have a draw that kept you reading. Hopefully further books will hope the author get better at character development.

I enjoyed this, and the memories it rekindled for me of Bristol. I had ordered the large print version as there was less of a line for it, but regretted it as it's hard to attach enough gravitas to such a serious subject as a child going missing when I feel like I'm reading a book for a 8 year old. (No offence whatsoever to those for whom a large text book is useful, it's just a passing comment - maybe because it didn't have the larger pages of most large text books).
Anyway...I found this very readable (despite having to turn the pages so often!), and would recommend it.
