"Intense and gripping...Coes' name should be on the lips of every reader who enjoys Vince Flynn and the Brads (Taylor and Thor)." —Booklist (starred review) on Trap the Devil

Only one man stands between a powerful cabal planning an invisible coup of the U.S. government and their brutal goals—Dewey Andreas.

A group of some of the most powerful people in the government, the military, and the private sector, has begun a brutal plan to quietly take over the reins of the U.S. government. They’ve begun to remove the people who stand in their way—and replace them with their own sympathizers and puppets. They’ve already taken out the Speaker of the House—whose death was made to look like an accidental drowning—and the president and vice president are next. Once they have their own people in place, they plan to start a bloody, brutal war on an unimaginable scale.

On restricted duty while he recovers from injuries incurred on a previous mission, Dewey Andreas is sent to Paris by CIA Director Hector Calibrisi. The Secretary of State is going there for secret talks, and Dewey is to be an extra layer of security above the State Department team. But what should be an easy mission couldn’t go more wrong. The cabal has sent in a hit man to take out the Secretary of State and lay the blame for this murder at the feet of Dewey himself.

With the Secretary of State dead, shot by Dewey’s weapon, Dewey is on the run and out in the cold, desperately trying to unravel the plot before the conspirators succeed in killing millions of innocents.

Coes delivers another non-stop action thriller with a great story line. The idea of a shadow government taking over the USA (or anywhere else) creeps me out. This story reaches back to earlier CIA days when mechanisms were put in place that provide opportunities for individuals in government to run shadow operations that get corrupted to something really evil. All the while reading this book, you keep asking can this really happen to our country. Coes walks a tightrope between setting up a false premise for shadow operatives to take over the government (all Muslims are bad and must be wiped out) and using that premise to justify murdering elected officials to take control of the country. So Dewey Andreas is all about catching the bad guys, and uses violent force to do that, but at the same time struggles within himself over the things he does to achieve the goal of protecting the country and the side effects his actions have on others who are essentially innocent bystanders. Good read.

Geez, looking at the back cover, this author really has some kind of gigantic skull/forehead; kind of reminds me of that dug-up mummified alien from Nazca:

Not kidding, except for the lack of the nose, this alien and the author . . .

As a long-time reader of Coes previous books, I thought the writing style was a little odd for the first couple of chapters but otherwise the storyline was fantastic. I highly recommend this book!

Coes is Coes, a master at his craft. First fifty pages you are Andreas. You feel his anger, you feel his hate, Andreas is no longer a story character, he is you and you are him wanting to make life better but doing it by his rules. Can not put this book down.
