I saw this movie when it first came out and I remember being mostly shocked by it. On second viewing, I got more out of it. I was able to see the Isabelle Huppert character as more than just a disturbed person. Disturbed people don't come from nothing. I watched again trying to understand what could make someone behave that way. This is really a kind of psychological thriller. The shift of power and control between the three main characters - piano teacher (Isabelle Huppert), her mother (Annie Girardot), a younger male student (Benoît Magimel) is fascinating and, yes, disturbing. Sex is a weapon and piano teacher, Ms. Erika Kohut, is wielding it. As a piano teacher, she is the picture of what's proper, if a bit stern. When she steps out of that role, she becomes something else. If you are looking for a light comedy, this ain't it. Director Michael Haneke doesn't make such films. But, his films are brilliant. The three main actors fill their roles with equal, uncompromising intensity.

Michael Haneke is a director of high repute ... but ... this sordid story scrapes the bottom of the cess pit for me!

This film by controversial director Michael Haneke is fairly unique for its theme. It is an exploration of human psychology where desires are supressed and twisted. A fairly interesting film by a talented director.

I applaud the important erotic experiment that forms the basis of this film: a brusque, passionate, celibate professor of music tries to enact her kinky sexual urges with a younger student. Isabelle Huppert is absolutely perfect as the music teacher. But in the end, the film is a disappointment, because it chickens out and opts for the conventional bourgeois cop-out that kinky sex must be associated with mental instability. Instead, why couldn’t it have adopted the more interesting and realistic approach of portraying the complex spectrum of human sexual expression as normal?
