Idris Elba as The Gunslinger completely transcends Matthew McConaughey's version of the Randall Flagg incarnation in this time travel Stephen King adaptation. The CGI is visually stunning. Recommend watching this movie on Blu-Ray if you're a fan of Idris Elba and special effects.

The actors were good. This film bears little resemblance to the books. A waste of my time.

Was watching movie for a long time before anything even remotely was from the book. The Dark Tower book are rich, but this movie would be a Z level rated one. Not worth your time.

This movie was alright. It was the first time I saw Matthew McConaughey play a villain in this movie. Idris Elba was one great hero in this movie. The fight scene in this movie was actually the best part about this movie.

This should have been good. The action scenes are decent, and McConaughey's take on the Man in Black is just dripping with charm and evil, but I just couldn't get into this. I enjoyed Stephen King's series of books, and I understand that you can't turn seven volumes (some of them pretty thick) into a 95-minute movie without taking some liberties. That's not my issue. It's more that the world of this movie wasn't really that compelling. You'd think a broken world of ruins in which magic and science coexist would be pretty cool, but this movie breathes a sigh of relief when our heroes leave that behind for the bustle of familiar New York City. Roland has something of a redemption arc, and Jake learns something about being a Gunslinger, but their motivations, and the apocalyptic danger of the Man in Black's plans, never quite connect. It's not the fault of the excellent cast, maybe the problem is an underdone script, or an overcut film.

This film falls short. Perhaps it was too ambitious? Perhaps the screenwriter failed to distill such a significant novel into two hours of script, thereby leaving it too scattered to become a cohesive film? Perhaps the director simply blew it when it came to pacing and developing the evil of the villian and the mythos of the hero? Perhaps all of these things - it was entertaining in its own fashion, but this was an underwhelming film viewing experience. I couldn't help but think The Dark Tower is too much for a simple film - what it really needs is a cable or streaming studio to develop it into a multi-part series so things can be appropriately developed, explored and paced. As a film, this fell short of good entertainment for me.

I did not read the Stephen King adaptation of this novel. I thought it was alright. The continuity and special effects of the film were subpar. They must have had a tight budget to work with even though they had Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey cast as the leads.

Good adaptation of King's sci-fi/horror book with his trademark black and white Good vs. Evil. U.K. actor Tom Taylor plays a young New York artist with "The Shine" (paranormal sensitivity) and is considered crazy by most--until his persistence finds him a portal to parallel universes and the guardian of the universe, The Dark Tower. Idris Elba is excellent as the cynical, almost-out-of-faith Gunslinger while Matthew McConaughey steps out of his usual good guy role and revels in being the truly evil Man in Black. Note this has scenes of children being kidnapped and tortured in attempts to break down The Dark Tower, so not recommended for under 13.

Script does not remotely resemble books from the master writer King, harmless and dull except this repeated chant:

“I do not aim with my hand; he who aims with his hand has forgotten the face of his father. I aim with my eye.
I do not shoot with my hand; he who shoots with his hand has forgotten the face of his father. I shoot with my mind.
I do not kill with my gun; he who kills with his gun has forgotten the face of his father. I kill with my heart.”
