Yejide and Akin are husband and wife who’s lives become entwined in lies, loss, and polygamy. Narrated by Yejide and Akins own opinions of how their story came to be, make for a unique read.

Bailey's short list. Adebayo can certainly tell a story. However, this novel, narrated alternatively by a husband and a wife, raises the issues of polygamy and the necessity to have children, outside the context of patriarchy. The story does not really display any broader understanding beyond the events.

This is a book about a marriage, looked at in universal ways that many people can relate to but also from the more cultural views of a Nigerian couple. It deals with a lot of issues and will evoke many strong opinions and emotions in you when you read it. I thought it was quite good and I will look for more work by this author in the future.

Beautifully written, emotionally intense story of a marriage, set in modern urban Nigeria. Narrated alternately by wife Yejide and husband Akin, who share intimacies and betrayals as they respond in different ways to family and cultural pressures (including unwilling polygamy) and personal tragedies including parenting children with sickle cell. Ayobami Adebayo 's strength is her unyielding compassion for her characters. The best compliment I can pay is that I finished reading with highly conflicted feelings about one character whose actions really merit contempt. An enlightening portrait of extended family relationships. Particularly strong is Yejide's journey from unhappy daughterhood to romantic young adulthood to heartbreaking motherhood. Ends with a reunion and the hope of reconciliation.

Stay With Me was one of my favourite works of fiction in 2017. I haven't yet read a book by a Nigerian author that hasn't been completely satisfying! Ayobami Adebayo's debut novel is a compelling narrative that deals with the many, many intricacies of marriage and parenthood within the context of 1980s Nigeria. This novel may be triggering for those who have dealt with infertility or infant loss, but on the other hand, it may be comforting to recognize your own experiences in this narrative. I look forward to reading more from Adebayo.

Compelling portrait of marriage and a woman's life in Nigeria. Fabulous characters.

This is one of my favorite reads of 2017. The author is adept at use of duel point-of-view to tell us a complex story of the fracturing of a marriage. Add to that cultural expectations around family and societal norms. I learned a lot and also kept turning the page.

A fascinating depiction of marriage complete with loss, grief, betrayal, cultural influences: woman marries man who is impotent, culture demands eldest, most valued son conceives an heir: polygamy is norm: son's mother procures another wife for son to impregnate: son eventually kills 2nd wife: son schemes with his younger brother to impregnate wife: she bears 3 children: one dies of SIDS, the second of sickle cell inherited blood disorder: 3rd lives with sickle cell but mother believes daughter had died of sickle cell after separating from husband.
Well written, pace of plot, impotency, death of 2nd wife introduced within believable context.
