I'm not a Western fan, but I thought this movie was really good. I cared for the story and characters.

I loved it. Paced as it should have been. A brilliant, tragic Western with a wonderful core premise. A young, love struck kid who crosses Hell, high water, and the globe to find his one true love, Rose. I will look forward to more from John Maclean.

The movie is slow, but I didn't mind that; given the title, I expected it. I enjoyed this nontraditional Western and its setting. In my opinion, it is similar to and much better than The Hateful Eight, which was also slow but additionally painfully long--exactly twice as long as Slow West, in fact.

I don't understand DebAK's comment "Nothing to do here with reality or make-believe, or casting black actors. . ." Huh? I mean, it's either realistic or unrealistic, right? Anyway, I can see how this would be polarizing, but I thought it was a solid, occasionally subversive take on one of the most formulaic of genres. The cast is really good, although Kodi Smit-McPhee ("The Road") seemed a little miscast. You might recognize the Mountain from "Game of Thrones" in a small part. The violence was more deeply felt than in more action-based westerns, which I thought was a strength. It's the first film from the Scottish director John Maclean, who used to be in the Beta Band. For those who like their westerns a little dark and a little unusual. I didn't find it slow at all. Filmed in New Zealand.

Nothing to do here with reality or make-believe, or casting black actors (of which, by the way, there are MANY very successful out there), but simply with the movie being slow, boring and moronic.

UK, Australian, New Zealander, African, and Maori personnel made this neo-Western. Previously, Hollywood Westerns basically had two themes: 1) Good White Guys kill off bad Indians (Indians played by white guys with red makeup) and 2) Good white sheriffs combat bad white guys. In this new film of 18th century Coloradan lawless territories (filmed in the beautiful wilderness areas of New Zealand) nearly all of the white guys are lawless persons, cheating, menacing and killing competitors. African-Americans (usually totally absent in Hollywood Westerns) are played by African actors and American Indians are played by Maoris. I get the feeling that this new western is more realistic than the older Hollywood westerns we are so used to seeing.
