If you have any interest in AI that goes crazy in the name of protecting humanity, this is the book for you! A planet it attacked, and three ships come to rescue people that live there. The AI on the main ship was damaged and some pretty scary events in deep space happen, as a result. Very exciting and suspenseful science fiction/dystopian novel.

Told by a full cast where the battles in space will remind you of Star Wars and Battlestar Galactica. Kady's day started pretty horrible. She and Ezra break up, then the ice ball of a planet where she, her sister and mom live, is attacked. (She helps save Ezra.) Now they are all fleeing for their lives separate ships, fleeing for their lives. Add in a strange disease and the battleship's artificial intelligence seems to have gone off the rails. And Kady's bad day just became the worst year ever. First in a series, this is a must listen for those who love adventure and romance in space! (Don't worry all three books in the series are out and the book has been green-lit for a movie.)

What a fun read. Five stars for the unique concept and story-telling

Really enjoyed this. I'd describe it as "The Fault In Our Battlestars", with some homages to Joss Whedon's "Serenity" as well. My only disappointment is that the sequel (like the later volume of Brian K Vaughn's "Saga", another sci-fi must-read) is not available in print form, only as an e-book (what up, library???!).

The book starts off in the year of 2575 and two rival megacorporations are at war over a planet's resources and no-one living there was informed about it. Usually, your planet getting invaded is pretty bad on a normal day but they picked the worst day for Kady and Ezra since they just broke up a few hours ago and now they're forced to work together to get onto an evacuating fleet and off the planet before they die. That is only the tiny start of their problems though as Kady and Ezra find themselves in a much bigger problem in during their space travel when a horrible virus starts taking over the people aboard and the AI is acting strange...

Illuminae didn't grab me from the very start because the formatting of this book, told mostly through files and chat logs and mostly illustrated throughout, was so different to every other YA and sci-fi book I've read. Soon enough though I was just as hooked as everyone else that had read this book before me. One thing I can say is that this book will constantly shock and surprise you and probably hurt your feelings too!

Definitely in the top 3 books I've ever read, this book is simply amazing. The way it's written is unique and beautiful and the second book is even better. I'm super excited for obsidio!

This book was absolutely amazing! I recommend to anyone searching for a new obsession different from anything ever read. The cover is gorgeous, and the pages are literature and art mixed to become pure perfection.

This book is awesome. I feel there aren't enough young adult sci-fi books out there, but let's all just be glad this one exists. Kaufman and Kristoff do something amazing with this book-- they tell a story as though one is reading a long file of an event that happened in space. If you flip quickly through the book, you'll see pictures, emails, reports of video clips, IMs, and some crazy pages that look like word-art. This is what makes the book so scary thick (pictures break up a lot of the text). But trust me, you'll read the whole thing in a few days, and be putting the second book Gemina (which in my honest opinion was even better than Illuminae) on hold. This is a great action book with a touch of romance, amazing characters, and great writing.

Plot wise, this book follows Kady and Ezra. When their planet is attacked, they run for their lives and end up finding refuge on a spaceship--at least for the time being. Their ship is being chased down by the crazy people who attacked their planet, and their only hope for survival is getting to a way-point before their attackers finish them off. And that's the EASY part of what they have to do, because things inevitably get worse and worse.
