A girl on the verge of womanhood finds herself in a sensual fantasyland of vampires, witchcraft, and other threats in this eerie and mystical movie daydream. Serves up an endlessly looping, nonlinear fairy tale, set in a quasi-medieval landscape. Ravishingly shot, enchantingly scored, and spilling over with surreal fancies.

Scene by scene, there is much good to say about this. Very magical at times too. But the overall effect on me of this genre-bending film -- something I'm usually be inclined toward -- was "when does it end?" There are several story lines that coexist -- not bad for me as I like complex plots -- but then symbolism and surrealism are shoveled in. It's as if the film makers said, "It's been two minutes since there's been a cutaway to showing a rooster or polecat or an overhead shot, let's edit one in."

Another amazing Czech film. The cinematography is incredible. The opposite effect of an impressionist painting: the story makes no sense when you look at the entire film but actually connects well when looking close up, scene by scene. It holds you and never lets go. Watch it and open up your mind to a different way of making films. Indies today could learn a lot from this one.

Fascinating, surreal, dream-like film.
