"Ryuji Takasu has learned the hard way that appearances can be deceiving. Despite his inwardly sweet personality, his unintentionally sharp gaze and aggressive features give him the air of a delinquent thug, putting his chances at making friends, let alone a girlfriend, next to zero. It's Ryuuji's first day of his second year of high school and it seems as if things are looking up. He gets to sit in between his only friend, Yuusaku, and more importantly, the girl he's secretly crushing on, Kushieda Minori. But just when he thinks the stars are aligned in his favor, he unwittingly crosses the most feared girl in school, Aisaka Taiga, making her into his arch enemy. To top it off, Taiga has moved in right next door to Ryuuji and happens to be Minori's best friend! Can this school year possibly get any worse?!"--Publisher's web site.

Toradora is a series well known by many in the anime community. And while it's strong, likable characters are a large portion of this romantic comedies appeal, I think how it subverts your expectations for the genre are what have garnered it so much attention. It may at first appear to be following many tropes, as at the beginning it does, only to turn those around and provide what, in many ways, feels closer to some real, genuine, human moments than many romantic comedy anime or manga are willing to approach.

You will laugh, and perhaps even get misty eyed, but either way if romance and strong characters, along with some subversion of genre tropes are something you're interested in, then this is a series worth giving a look.

"Aisaka Taiga is stubborn. Mean. Unrepentantly self-centered. Once she sets her mind on something, she does it. No ifs, ands or buts about it. Most importantly, deep down inside, at the core of her being, she's a complete spaz." - Takasu Ryuuji
