Humanity's desperate mad dash(es) to survive a world-ending catastrophe - with all the good, the inspiring and the ugly it entails, over an odyssey that spans several thousand years. A big book, well worth the time.

Neal Stephenson tackles traditional hard scifi and it's some of the very best work he's done. Believable premise, incredible detail, a crisis of world-ending proportions, and deeply human characters. The first two parts of this novel are my favorite Stephenson writing to date. The only reason this isn't a five-star book is because of an underdeveloped third act.

I love this book! It is like there is a whole first part that is a world unto itself and then...5,000 years later, a whole 'nother world! Awesome! This fits in with his other non-baroque cycle stuff ( which I have yet to get into) --Anathem, Reamde, Cryptonomicon, Diamond Age etc.

I started off as a huge Neal Stephenson fan with the Baroque Cycle and have been consistently disappointed after.

Elmore Leonard's admonition to "Try to leave out the part that readers tend to skip." comes to mind.
