In 2012, Louisiana State Police Detectives Rust Cohle and Martin Hart are brought in to revisit a homicide case they worked in 1995. As the inquiry unfolds in present day through separate interrogations, the two former detectives narrate the story of their investigation, reopening unhealed wounds, and drawing into question their supposed solving of a bizarre ritualistic murder in 1995.

Simply put this is as good as it gets for murder/mystery drama. Not sure about any panning below. Must be the air in the windy city or something!!!! I agree with the comment about True Detective season two (with Colin Farrell and Rachel MacAdams) this one pales in comparison. True Detective season one scores 9.1 on IMDb and is well deserved. Great theme song from the Handsomes ("From the dusty May sun, her looming shadow grows...")

True Detective Season 1 is a marvel of craftsmanship, storytelling and performances. This is becoming a rarity these days.

pathological grief, spewing sophomoric nihilism

Great series to binge. Based on horrific true events. Very well done. DO NOT WATCH SEASON TWO. SO BAD...(different story, different actors, does not compare to season 1)

Wow, Matthew McConnaghey gave an amazing performance. The story is dark and engrossing. More of a story of 2 flawed men and their evolving friendship.

Excellent series. Dark and disturbing, but great acting and story.

This is an outstanding television show- it ranks right up there with " Breaking Bad " for a modern day masterpiece ( or as close as you're likely to get ). The use of flashbacks may confuse slower viewers, however, for astute people they will understand that this story involves paying close attention to the story. The show has a lot of depth and perceptive viewers will pick-up on these 'buried ' threads.This pays off in spades for the ending. Great, great show.
There isn't much to criticize about True Detective... Because:
- the storytelling is very fascinating, with 2 investigations going on (one takes place in 1995, the other one 17 years after)
- actors performance : with Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, you can expect a good acting performance. Well it's even better than what I could think. McConaughey gives a mind blowing performance.
- photography is amazingly beautiful as Louisiana reveals both it's beauty and most frightening aspects of the bayou.
- It's an anthology, so there won't be 10 deceiving seasons coming up, but new potential jewels...
Definitely a must see TV Show.

Long, drawn-out and way overrated. Horses for courses I guess. I felt it was eight hours of my life I could have spent in some other useless activity. One that would have been more pleasurable, cause this one sure wasn't. One funny thing, Woody Harrelson is portrayed as a babe-magnet. As if...

The timelines braid and converge in 2012 as each man is pulled back into a world they believed they'd left behind. In learning about each other and their killer, it becomes clear that darkness lives on both sides of the law.

Coarse Language: Unnecessary use of continual viewing of naked corpses. Boring interviews

Maggie: In a former life, I used to exhaust myself navigating crude men who thought they were clever, so ask your questions or I’m leaving.
Cop: That’s a cop’s wife all right.
Maggie: Not anymore.
===========
Rust: Everybody judges, all the time. Now, you got a problem with that, you’re living wrong.
============
Rust: People out here, it's like they don't even know the outside world exists, might as well be living on the xxyyzz moon.
Martin: There's all kind of ghettos in the world.
Rust: It's all one ghetto, man, a giant gutter in outer space.
