Therese has married wealthy but arrogant Bernard Desqueyroux, and is now part of his oppressively traditionalist family. When Bernard's younger sister Anna falls madly in love with a handsome young Portuguese man, Therese is tasked by the family to persuade Anna to forego the planned nuptials. Others offering comments seemed to find more than I did in this film, which was just too depressing. Beautiful photography, but not uplifting or inspiring.

A special film with a wonderful cast. One of the best French films I've ever seen. I want to see more of Anais Demoustier, she is talented and very beautiful. The film locations are beautiful and so are the costumes. "Therese" is a special French film that I hope you won't miss!

"Therese" is a moving story about a woman fighting for her independence from a suffocating marriage. Although Bernard does not actively do anything to harm Therese, the mindset of provincial French families during the 1920s and 1930s was more than she could bear. This is a good film which depicts that era of history accurately. I enjoyed it but thought it a little slow.

Therese, based upon the novel Therese Desqueyroux written by the Jewish Nobel prize winning Francois Mauriac, was the last film of the great Jewish film director Claude Miller. Many members of Miller’s family barely survived the Holocaust and this and other traumatic life experiences were the bases for some of Miller’s themes of anti-Semitism and anxiety lurking in the background of his films. This film explores the relationships of three wealthy French families in 1920’s France, two Catholic and one Jewish. Audrey Tautou (of Amelie fame) plays Therese, marries a rich, authoritarian, anti-Semitic , and wealthy man, partly to combined two different huge French estates, and mostly not out of romantic love. When Tautou’s closest Catholic girl friend falls in love with a Jewish man, the friend’s erotic disclosures drives the Tautou character to tragic actions.

Audrey Tautou gives a strong, quiet performance as a woman suffering against the constraints of her societal marriage, depression, and repressed life. A bit slow at times, but well-acted and beautifully shot.
