A young woman is unconscious, bleeding from a head wound. Hiding in the cellar is her husband, ready to wield a knife at anyone who tries to enter, desperate to protect his secret. What happens next leaves one of the officers dead, the other fighting for her career and Inspector Banks with a chilling murder investigation that will test him to the limit. After starting to watch, I realized I viewed this before and found it a bit too gruesome to watch again.

Okay, but not memorable.

Raises the important issue, May a small policewoman armed with baton legally strike a much larger male multiple-murderer attacking her with a machete?

The heinous crime could be from some newspaper clippings with a couple of manufactured twists that made NO sense and the main characters behaved obnoxiously throughout; lousy directing and screen adaptation?

re the comments about it "being a trend in british tv series....younger female officers" i suggest you read the books. in the novels dci banks is attracted to, and vice versa, women of an age close to his own. and he gets turned down a lot.

i watch the tv series...think it ok. but i LOVE the books. much, much more enthralling. characters more diversified too, in every way.

Love the scenery. Do not like & cannot watch for any length of time the lead actor. Good book series.

stephen tompkinson is not right for banks and is quite irritating. andrea lowe is not right for annie cabot. was a this actually a banks book? it's just a play on the bernardo murders. very disappointing.

Love the Banks series! Interesting characters, sound plot lines and terse dialogue.
The library is ordering three more copies of this DVD as I type this, but due to its popularity (130 patrons on hold) perhaps a few more copies are required.
In any case, to me it is worth the wait.

Banks: Why are you a cop?
Annie: Oh, I don't know. Money's decent and I like everything neat and tidy, OK? Bad guys punished, good guys rewarded. But I don't live and breathe it, because I don't want to end up like...

You're ambitious, ruthless and
amoral. Every team needs a player like that.
