An adaptation of Patricia Highsmith's novel The Talented Mr. Ripley, this film stars Alain Delon as Tom Ripley, a duplicitous American charmer in Rome on a mission to bring his privileged acquaintance Philippe Greenleaf back to the United States; what initially seems a carefree tale of friendship soon morphs into a thrilling saga of seduction, identity theft, and murder. Bonus features include the original English language trailer, an archival interview with Alain Delon, and more.

“Purple Noon,” based upon the Patricia Highsmith novel, “The Talented Mr. Ripley, became the breakthrough film for Alain Delon in 1960. The novel was refilmed in English with actor Matt Damon playing Ripley in 1999. This is the story of a murderous manipulator, with all talent and no conscience. In this first novel of Tom Ripley, we see him transformed from a subservient grift artist into a very talented and dominant personality. I give the Criterion Collection an extra half star because of the inclusion of three great interviews, one of Delon, one about the director Rene Clement and his actor Delon, and the third about Patricia Highsmith, one of America’s great psychological/suspense authors. The interview about Clement indicates that his suspense film also included lots of symbolism in his scenes. The ship and near drowning scene was an actual scene where Delon could have been seriously hurt or even killed as he was on the boat and landed in the sea as an unexpected storm arose during the filming. See if you can see some of that psychological evil in the Highsmith novel filmed by Hitchcock ("Strangers on a Train").

Gorgeous, colorful film. Plotwise it does take at least half an hour to get rolling and it never seems to go as deep as it should.

Who's more gorgeous at 20: Alain Delon, Robert Wagner, or Rob Lowe?
