Seventeen-year-old Erling is a rumored murderer and therefore sent to the Bastoy Boys Home correctional facility. Once there he clashes with the island facility's governor who believes manual labor, rigid discipline, and harsh punishment is the only way to turn these boys around. Refusing to accept the constant abuse, Erling leads the boys in a violent uprising that will bring them head to head with no less than the Norwegian Army.

Impeccably designed, Marius Holst’s engrossing drama was the most expensive Norwegian films ever produced at the time and that big budget is evident throughout from the bleak snow-blasted locales to the flawless reproductions of the original reformatory buildings. Reading from an insightful script that cleverly weaves elements from Golding’s "Lord of the Flies" and Melville’s "Moby Dick", stars Benjamin Helstad and Stellan Skarsgård lead a sturdy cast, both young and old, in what begins as a “true story” but quickly morphs into a lofty parable on dignity, adversity, and the power of defiance. Even the film’s rather heavy-handed final scene falls well within its literary grasp when taken as the maritime metaphor it was clearly meant to be.

Amazing performances by such a young cast. Although their are a few featured adult parts, most of the film is about boys sent to Dastoy Boys Correctional facility. The movie is intense, but worth every minute of it!

Very well made movie. Very sad these boys really had to endure this back in 1915. Great acting.

A little known gem. The best film - foreign or domestic - I've seen this year.

Not a Hollywood movie so I loved the fact it did not have a Hollywood ending. Well worth a look, IMO.....

Unbelievably sad, grim and moving. This film is based on a true story. Great actors!
