Ordinary story telling, this is neither an epic, not is it elegantly written. A strong anti traditional Sudanese sentiment is evident, raising questions about the author's authenticity and purpose.

Beautifully written. Descriptive and evocative of another life in another place of another time.

Set in 1950s Sudan, this book tells the story of an affluent Sudanese family. Tragedy strikes the son who subsequently becomes a well-known poet. It contrasts the traditional vs the modern world. The author can tell a story.

this is one of the best books I have read this year.great writing and a touching story.

I discussed it with a friend who is from Sudan originally, and he had praise for her writing and depiction of Sudan in the 1950's,the charcaters are memorable--
