Slough House is a dumping ground for British intelligence agents who’ve screwed up a case in any number of ways—by leaving a secret file on a train or blowing a surveillance. River Cartwright, one such “slow horse,” is bitter about his failure and about his tedious assignment transcribing cell phone conversations.

When a young man is abducted and his kidnappers threaten to broadcast his beheading live on the Internet, River sees an opportunity to redeem himself.

Is the victim who he first appears to be? And what’s the kidnappers’ connection with a disgraced journalist? As the clock ticks on the execution, River finds that everyone has his own agenda.

Baker & Taylor
Intelligence agent River Cartwright, after being banished from high-profile work for incompetence, suspects a prominant British journalist with ties to an extremist party of being behind the kidnapping of a Muslim teenager.

Praise for Mick Herron:

"Mick Herron never tells a suspense story in the expected way. . . . In Herron's book, there is no hiding under the desk."—The New York Times Book Review

"Stylish and engaging."—The Washington Post

"[A] masterful thriller. . . . The intricate plot, coupled with Herron's breezy writing style, results in superior entertainment that makes most other novels of suspense appear dull and slow-witted by comparison."—Publishers Weekly, starred review

"Like a good movie . . . grabs the reader from the first page."—Booklist, starred review

Mystery series first book tells of a group of has-been MI-5 operatives known as ‘slow horses’ who become involved in a seeming terrorist kidnapping.

A lot is not known for a while as Herron fills readers in on characters’ backstories and unfolds the mystery, so I’d say this is a slow-paced story. It’s funny at times as these are characters with foibles. I’ll have to read more before deciding to stay with them.

See comments of Spook Street. Same cast of characters. Herron is a brilliant writer and the British English and London street scene descriptions are great. I suspect that all books in the Slough House series are similar. MI5 rejects working in a rundown part of the city not only fight crime but the higher-ups at Regent's Park.

While this book was written a couple of years ago, it brings up situations that are really pertinent to what is going on in the world right now. A group of MI5 agents who have messed up their careers in one way or another, called Slow Horses, are put in the middle of a crisis where right wing British nationalist have kidnapped a Pakistani British national (who happens to be the nephew of a prominent person in Pakistan's government) and threatened to cut his head off. The Slow Horses must find out who is really behind the attacks and try to rescue the young Pakistani man before he is executed live on the internet.

Slough House is where disgraced MI5 agents are sent; aka "Slow Horses". River Cartwright has just been sent there; and he's trying to get out. Good action adventure yarn. Beginning of series

River Cartwright has been banished to Slough House - the British intelligence service's dumping ground for agents that have messed up. This usually means working at incredibly boring tasks but the slow horses of Slough House get to prove their are not that slow after all when a young man is abducted. If you enjoyed the movie "Kingsmen" you'll enjoy the ride.
