This is a deeply moving portrait of Maurice Sendak, a seminal talent who is conflicted with his success, and whose lifelong obsession with death has subtly and ironically influenced his work. Now 81, Sendak is best known for his first book, Where the wild things are, which he wrote after spending ten years as an illustrator. Through his own words, firsthand photos, and illustrations, Sendak offers a rare, intimate, and unexpected look at his exceptional life.

An amazing, intimate portrait of Maurice Sendak created just three years before he passed away. Sendak's insight on a child's perception of the world is going to stay with me. I especially loved Meryl Streep's reading of the book "The Sign on Rosie's Door", which she presented at Maurice's Birthday Tribute - absolutely masterful.

What a character Maurice Sendak was!
I enjoyed the witty, and heart-felt back and forth of the author and filmmaker during the documentary.
Viewing this film, and perhaps some of the extras, is not only a way to learn more about Maurice Sendak's work, but also gives one a sweet little glimpse into real artists showing each other deep respect and love for just being themselves: as creative, non-conformist, oddballs.

What a mensch! This is a little gem is directed by Spike Jonze. Don't miss the extras which include a short film by Spike as well as Meryl Streep and the late great James Gandolfini reading Sendak's books aloud to an audience.

I still haven't seen the film "Where the Wild Things Are," but I saw this film and it was great. Sendak is a peculiar human being and it was great to 'know him' through this documentary.
