This book is unlike anything I have ever read. It is an amazing multiculutral poetical history of the world that might as well be called, The Long Legacy of Human Heartache. Galeano's poetic prose captures a biography in a paragraph. Some of the major themes explored are the violence against women, the European mistreatment of the darker-skinned races, and the people - like Beethoven - who fought against hypocrisy and lies. This is a profoundly sad work, but beautiful in the extreme.
