I really like Parker, but didn't like this. Like the recent batch of dark (grimdark?) fantasy that involves washed up heroes or soldiers, this relies heavily on a sense of how dangerous and awesome these characters once were ... while the modern-day plot has little real "oomph." I kept waiting for something to happen, and nothing ever really does except for some pretty mundane tragedy. It would be one thing if the author revealed in a surprise twist that these characters weren't as badass as the narrator had told us all along, or something along those lines. But that doesn't happen. It feels a lot like the book started with a great idea, and then the author didn't know where to go with it.

My least favorite KJ Parker novel. The build is exceedingly slow and the ending lackluster.

Good character development, interesting setting, but every time the plot is in danger of moving forward the author tosses in a flashback to bring it to a screeching halt. The flashbacks worked during the first 50 pages, but KJ Parker's addicted and had to have another hit whenever his characters and events threatened to force something to happen in his NOW, wham, another meaningless flashback. I lost patience at page 197. Thumbs down.

I read Parker's Engineer series and loved it. I had high hopes for The Company. Sadly, The Company was so uninteresting that I quit halfway through the book. I don't often give up on books like that, but the writing was dull and I didn't care about the characters or their situation.
