Classic Jack! Great film with Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway starts off as a basic detective story but it gets deeper and deeper with plenty of twists. Nothing is quite as it seems, but then again it is Chinatown. Script by Robert Towne, directed by Roman Polanski. Released in 1974. A classic film that holds up very well--whether your first viewing or multiple viewing--great film.

Paralells an actual scandal that took place in the 1920's or 30's in Los Agnegles were during the drought season water was being covertly diverted from the reservoir system at night to commercial crop growing operations. Instead of using the name William Mulland the the movie uses the ficticious name of Hollis Mulwray. Mulholland was an engiineer & allegedly responsible for the undercover diversion of the water iin L,A. which is the plot theme. The famous Mulholland Drive in Los Angeles is named after William Mulholland. A gutsy film noir in colour. Nicholson & Dunnaway make a great acting team. Definitly for adult audiences due to naure of the interpersonal story. Also course & explicite language & mature graphic depictions. This movie was considered very daring when first aired on TV. The networks got heat for it.

A P.I. (private investigator) has a task to find out what a woman's husband does in his free time, then he realizes the lady who hired him was a fake. This mystery-thriller made in the 70s still holds up today, with superb acting and the cinematography. I loved the style and score, it really felt as if I went back in time.

If you loved [Blade Runner] and/or [The Maltese Falcon], you’re gonna love [Chinatown], too.

About an hour into "Chinatown", Noah Cross (John Huston) says to Jake Gittes (Jack Nicholson), "You may think you know what you're dealing with, but believe me, you don't." Gittes, whose heard this rap before, just smiles. "Why is that funny?" asks Cross. "It's what the D.A. used to tell me about Chinatown." If any exchange defines "Chinatown" the movie then this is it. It's a film where the cliched metaphor of the onion is quite apt: the more layers you peel away, the more layers you find. And the less you're likely to understand. It begins life as a simple detective story, but eventually spins out of control into a web of intrigue.

Jack Nicholson plays a private eye whose investigations into adultery lead him to a bigger, more dangerous conspiracy.

"Forget it Jake, its Chinatown" The perfect ending line to one of the best movies in American film history.

Nominated for many Academy Awards, winner of only a few, this movie withstands the test of time. Yes, Jack is very young, but what a performance, as are the performances of all the cast.

I watch this movie about every three years, I rate as about the 5th best movie I have ever seen. Just a great masterpiece.

A perfect movie. Fascinating (and still relevant) plot line regarding water rights politics. Great performances by Nicholson and Dunaway.

Polanski's neo-noir contemporary classic has all the flair and fever of a forties-era hard-boiled detective story. However, watching it years past its release, most of the twists have been spoiled for me and the intrigue feels stale in this fast-paced culture. Nonetheless, it looks beautiful and what feels like old Hollywood glamour still shines. The story isn't rusty. I just expected more in that big finale. It reminded me faintly and inexplicably of BLADE RUNNER, another auteured visually striking classic of today. The mood and pacing was similar, even if the themes and setting aren't. In the end, I've watched CHINATOWN once, and that's fine, I enjoyed it, but I wouldn't watch it again.

Noah Cross: "Exactly what do you know about me? Sit down." Jake Gittes: "...Mainly that you're rich... and too respectable to want your name in the newspapers." Noah Cross: " 'Course I'm respectable - I'm old. Politicians, ugly buildings, and whores all get respectable if they last long enough."

Noah Cross (on the meal - fish): "I hope you don't mind... I believe they should be served with the head." Jake Gittes: "Fine... long as you don't serve the chicken that way."
