This movie, along with Slaughterhouse Five, are probably the best war films ever made.

Full Metal Jacket, produced, directed and co-written by Stanley Kubrick, is not an easy film to watch, but from the first frame to the last, it is a riveting one.

Full Metal Jacket is the gritty, psychologically disturbing tale of the process that turns humans into trained killers. The film is essentially diveded into two halves, with the first taking part during marine recruit training where the would-be soldiers are molded into remorseless killing machines. The performance by Vincent D'onofrio highlights this intense first half. The second half follows Private Joker to Vietnam and the combat of Hue City. Surprisingly, the violence of war pales in comparison to the dehumanization process and build-up of the recruit training. Despite losing some momentum(which would have been almost impossibe to keep up) it completes the story by showing how the training has effected them mentally. The combat scenes feature great cinematography among the backdrop of countless burning buildings. This is a welcome change from the scenery of the jungle of most nam films. The end is cold, calculated and surprising, culminating in an extrordinary experience. The film also contains a unique feel to it, credited to director Stanley Kubrick. The acting of Mathew Modine carries the film and the now infamous character of Sg. Hartman make this an unforgetable film. Definitely worth the purchase for the fact that it can be viewed many times because of its deep layers of meaning. The Stanley Kubrick Colection also features the origional cinematic trailer. In short, if you're looking for a film about vietnam then skip this, but if you're looking for a film about the dehumanization of war then this classic fits the bill. The film was nominated for best adapted screenplay and was voted second best picture of the year by the late critic Gene Siskel.

The training sequence is by far the best thing about this film and once they get to Vietnam, it's unfocused and unconvincing, with no strong performances to ground it. The meticulous and autocratic Kubrick somehow thought England could sub for Southeast Asia. One of his weakest efforts, but his apologists will insist otherwise.

Director Stanley Kubrick has already directed two famous anti war movies in "Paths of Glory" and "Dr. Strangelove or How I Learned to Stoop Worrying and Love The Bomb" when he made "Full Metal Jacket". As with the original two movies, Kubrick shows the realities of war. In "Full Metal Jacket" you see the troops in boot camp. Then we see the troops in battle. I will leave it to you if boot camp has prepared these men for war. As with all Stanley Kubrick movies, the cinematography is great. Kubrick also shares in the screen play, which he did on most of this movies. I think their is quite a comment of war on the DVD cover. Notice the helmet shows someone wrote Born to Kill and just over to the side of it is the peace symbol. I leave the movie for you to draw your own conclusions. Kubrick is a master story teller and he doesn't let you down in "Full Metal Jacket".

Was looking forward to seeing this film again after so many years, but didn't realize this DVD is a FULL SCREEN copy from 10 years ago!!! So I returned it without watching it. :( Sorry, but if you're gonna watch it (on a modern TV) you gotta do it right.

Really this movie is two different movie in one. The first part about boot camp is chilling, powerful and mesmerizing. However, the second part about actually going to war is pretty pedestrian and quite dull and boring. I give the first part 5 stars and the second part 0 stars and thus average to 3 stars overall. For a much more visceral and powerful portrayal of Vietnam front lines I recommend Platoon, a 5 star movie overall.

I had waited a long time to see this movie, and the wait was well worth it! This movie is raw, fierce and brutal, representing how terrible and pointless war can be. Lee Ermy, who was a real drill instructor from the Vietnam War, is outstanding as Gunnery Sergeant Hartman. One of the best war movies ever made!

Komet, this is the only format I am aware of that was released for the movie. Stanley Kubrick was always worried about how his films would look on standard (for the time) TVs which were 4:3. From what I recall reading there was no letterbox version released and the movie was shot in 4:3.

Sexual Content: Sexual language. A couple non graphic scenes with prostitutes.

Violence: Not as violent as many war films. However, the middle has a very disturbing scene were a man shoots his drill sergeant than shoots himself in the mouth. Blood and brains spray everywhere. Altthough this is the most violent scene, there are a couple war scenes with snipers. Blood splatters when people are shot.
