This book has great information on the origins of hamsters and the five breeds. However, it gives bad information on hamster cage size by suggesting that commercial cages are large enough for hamsters. However, its minimum dimensions are closer to accurate, though still not ideal. (suggesting 24x18 inches, 450-500 square inches is ideal as smaller cages have been linked to aggressive behaviors and stress). Also suggests using pine shavings for substrate, which causes respiratory issues. The book does also have great information on bringing hamsters home, hamster nuitrition, and hamster health, more than enough for any beginner. Even as an experienced hamster owner I found the section on communication and bad behavior helpful.
