So many 'war books' are about the soldiers. Having just finished reading "The Baker's Secret" (by Stephen Kiernan), I was reminded of another book that focuses instead on the civilian price of war. I read The Siege years ago, at University I suspect, possibly when I took a Russian History class. I remember being moved. And stunned. And humbled by the horror of it all. And impressed by the ingenuity of the winter road. It is a book we should probably all read. Like "All Quiet on the Western Front" and the above mentioned Baker's Secret. I need to read it again.
