While helicopters overhead spray against a Medfly infestation, a group of peoples' lives in Los Angeles intersect, some casually, some to more lasting effect. While they go out to concerts and jazz clubs and even have their pools cleaned, these same folks also lie, drink, and cheat. Death itself seems never to be far away. A look at human life and American culture with over 20 lives interweaving.

interweaving contemporaneous story lines, this is Altman's masterpiece, for sure. If there is such a thing as a 1, 2-punch in filmmaking, THE PLAYER, and this one, are Altman's. as with most of his ensembles, the list of stars just keeps going and going. Madeiline Stowe, as Tim Robbins' long-suffering wife, deserves a mention, here. so does Chris Penn. as does the actor who later played as Iron Man. as does Lili Taylor, of DOGFIGHT fame. Lili Tomlin, Tom Waites, Huey Lewis of THE NEWS, Matthew Modine. as I said, the list just keeps going. Actors seem to thrive under Robert's direction, in a way quite unlike the way actors performed under his mentor, Alfred Hitchcock. But the story rules here. Taken from several stories by Raymond Carver, but not exactly: they have been given the Altman treatment.

Pretty good movie. Different stories of characters that were intertwined. Julianne Moore was quite young in it.

This is another masterpiece by late director Robert Altman. At three hours long, the storyline focuses on several families in LA. Most families are dysfunctional, with flawed characters. But I can't help but want to know more about them, and their hidden secrets. For me, the 3 hours flew by fast. And this film affirms Altman's position as one of the best directors from America.

A very good movie, the story parts flow smoothly. The acting is good. No boring moments while watching it. Sensitive parts are tastefully done. Well mixed sarcasm and humor. It is though not a comedy.

too many unpleasant characters in these stories...I turned it off and put away the book when I started feeling like I was being compelled to hang around people I didn't really like. I'm sure it's all high quality work, but "Why?"

This film has a very impressive cast. It was made almost 20 years ago so you see current Hollywood stars in their earlier years. There is nudity in some scenes that seems senseless and the film goes off the rails at some points, but overall this movie is watchable, but a bit of a snoozer.
