Well, I think I have found a new favorite author, and how wonderful that I have several more to read! Such a treat. WINTER WHEAT is a slow-paced, beautifully written study of character and place. We get to know Ellen Webb, a young and intelligent woman who loves her Montana wheat fields as much as she yearns to move away from them. Each character -- even peripheral folks we never actually "meet" in person, such as Aunt Eunice -- is a fully fleshed out individual. These folks lead quiet lives, not just of desperation (although there is some of that) but with lots of hidden emotion. I think I have found the American version of Anita Brookner (or perhaps Brookner is the British Mildred Walker).
This is a great book! I am amazed at the 2 star rating by some...such a wonderful story of growing up and understanding real love and real life. Beautifully written as well. G-rated and meaningful.
