As a happy reader of Walker's novels about Bruno, chief of police in southwestern France, I had assumed Walker was American. However, in his introduction to this non-fiction book he speaks of having been born and educated in England. That he likes the United States is evident, and he knows more about us than most of us do about ourselves. I recommend this book about 26 Americans and their place in U.S. history. It's easy to read, yet erudite.
