Jazz/Blues vocalists, starting with Bessie Smith and ending with Peggy Lee. Each of the 16 songs are in their entirety - not just brief clips - really a pleasure to watch, without a heavy-handed voice-over

Wow! Amazingly good video footage of classic lady blues singers (1930-1950), many accompanied by great orchestras and their leaders, others in excellent combo settings.

For anyone who really digs hearing "The Blues" belted out by some of the top, American, female, jazz singers of that bygone era which ran from the 1930s to the 1950s, then this documentary-DVD is certainly worth checking out._____ This DVD contains priceless, vintage film-clips of some of the greatest jazz/blues divas performing (usually before a live audience and backed by some of the greatest jazz musicians of the day) at various venues, from crowded night clubs to sold-out theaters._____ "The Ladies Sing The Blues" is an entertaining salute to these women who were a major force in American musical culture and who are credited with creating a distinctive art form while singing their way to stardom._____ Of the 12 female vocalists showcased on this DVD (which included Billie Holiday, Lena Horne, and Bessie Smith), my 3 favorites were Peggy Lee, Dinah Washington and Sarah Vaughan._____ All filmed in b&w, this DVD had a running time of 1 hour and it also included background information on each of the singers, as well._____ *Note* - While viewing the contents of this DVD, please, keep in mind that a fair amount of the footage is on the somewhat grainy side (but still watchable).
