In literature, many novels share the theme of self identity. By definition, self identity is made up of characteristics, such as race, religion, sexuality, gender, nationality, values and traditions, which distinguish oneself from other people. Often self-identity can be affected through the influence of others. In particular, self identity can be affected through traditional beliefs about gender roles.
